We live in land locked Colorado and only get to dive once a year on vacation. So when planning our 25th wedding anniversary trip to Maui we researched the dive shops on the island. We are so pleased to have chosen Scuba Shack! The crew's patience with our limitations and their personal attention accomodating our needs made the trip the absolute best. Captain Charley & Scuba Shack, we'll definitely be back to dive in the future! We dove molokini with 150' viz. On our second div e we had the pleasure of diving with an 6-8' manta ray over on reef's end. My students were amazed as to how smooth everything went from checking in, to being back at the dock by 10am and going to breakfast after diving twice in one day! They especially liked the profesionalism from the dive instructors and making them feel at home. Mahalo's to Scuba Shack....Capt. With varying levels of confidence and knowledge, our kids could prove to be a challenge to any instructor. However, he was a master at bringing them all together for some fantastic dives in Maui! Twenty years after our certification, it was very special for me and my husband to share such a special experience with our children. We look forward to having Jim and the Scuba Shack professionals teach our son soon! The dive sites, equipment, and professionalism of Scuba Shack is wonderful- we will be back! Jim the trainer was very patient and the girls were well prepared for their first open water dive. The experience is a highlight of their trip. My son and I just completed our open water dives with the Scuba Shack. We are from Montana so the clear, warm water of Maui was wonderful. Jim was our instructor...what a great guy! He made us feel very comfortable, answered all of my questions and lead us through our dives with ease. My son went on to do 10 more dives during our stay with another friend and his family and he had a wonderful time. I went out with the Scuba Schack for a third day with Jim, Dave, and Captain Valerie. As new divers I would highly recommend the Scuba Shack for your dives, they do a great job. The dives were wonderful, the sealife, coral, color of the water is beautiful here. We are hooked on diving and plan to be back next year with more of our family to dive with the Scuba Schack. A big thanks goes out to Jim from Tanner and myself...your love and passion for diving is transferred into your ability to instruct and make others feel comfortable with the world under the water. We just returned from a 10 day vacation on the island of which we dived 5 days with Scuba Shack. Charley and his staff were great. My wife snorkeled while I enjoyed some of the best diving I have ever experienced with Greg, Jim and Charley leading. Val runs a tight ship but the payoff is in a professional, safe and extremely enjoyable experience. If you are going to dive Maui, these are the folks to dive it with. Mark and I had just got certified at a lake inOklahomawith about 15 ft. of visibility the weekend before diving at Molokini. We had 150 ft. of visibility and Toby took us on 4 dives. We got to see a huge manta ray, lots of reef sharks, tons of sea turtles, barracudas, the list goes on and on! Best of all is that he took lots of pictures and videos of us and we got to share this incredible experience with our friends and family. We will definately be back! WeÕre first boat at the dock, in the water. 10 minutes to Molokini and first and only boat in the water. Decided against the Back Wall dive because of choppy waters, but appreciate the concern: safety first. The Reef's End dive was a spectacularconsolation prize. Red Hill was also a pleasant surprise. The diving was amazing and the boat ride was even more fun. The cave guarded by sharks were great. Your crew especially Val are truly amazing. When we went back in the afternoon to get our pictures from the dive, the ladies in the shop were very friendly and helpful too. You have a great setup going for you. Charlie and Capt. Valerie were great. The boat (Double Scoop) was fast and roomy, getting us to the dive locations before any of the other boats. I thoroughly enjoyed going on afamily vacationand not having to drag my equipment with me. The equipment provided by Scuba Shack was as good as my own and was newer. While FUN was the order of the day, Valerie and the crew were VERY professional and safety conscious. Vis was great inside the crater. Jay gave a good pre-dive briefing, periodically checked air for everyone, and did the dive at an easy pace so as not to miss anything. When I called to confirm Michelle was very helpful giving directions to the dock for the following morning. The equipment we used was in great shape. I would have no reservations about sending a referral student to Scuba Shack. Our two boys, age 13 and 12, did their classroom and pool dives here in Vancouver with Diving Locker. Then we popped over to Scuba Shack under theOpen Water Referral Program, and they did their checkout dives with Jim. We were diving as a family in no time! And, of course, the dives were spectacular! The boys did a total of 13 dives with Scuba Shack - and they'll remember them forever. I could tell you all about those dives and the diving inMaui, but you'll see that for yourself soon enough. In fact it was so good that I dove with them the entire week and made arrangements for my wife to finish her certification with them; since she started with some OTHER guys that were pretty obnoxious to the point of making her want to stop diving. The overall experience was so good that not only she got certified but sheÕs becoming SCUBA addict like my self. Capt Valerie is a great captain and very safety minded with her divers in and out of the water. Instructors are the best at their equipment briefing, and dive site briefing. I had 2 friends from Seattle, who haven't been diving since Thailand in 2006, and Toby had them at ease within minutes of meeting them. Boat was very spacious, CLEAN, and dry. Being Kama'aina from Maui and a PADI instructor and boat captain as well, I would/will HIGHLY RECOMMEND my ohana and friends to continue to dive with ScubaShack. I can say from experience with other dive companies on Maui and seeing the other boats and their set ups that Scub Shack runs a fun, very personable and well organized boat. I would hightly recomend this company for first time visitors and those that have not used them yet. My son and I dove with Toby and Jim and found them to be excellent underwater guides, pointing out all the marine life both large and small in the reefs and waters. In Hawaii, that operation is the Scuba Shack, hands down. Charlie, Jim and Capt. Val are a friendly, knowledgable, professional and fun bunch of divers. Mahalo!!! ,br> Pete Kobelt Whitefish, Montana USA - Wednesday,April 15,2009 at 13:37:47 (EDT) I choose Scuba Shack from the internet based on their web site, their store was very close to the condo we were staying in, and from what I could see on the net their discount price for multiple dives was as good as or better than the others. I was paying for myself and 2 daughters, so the discount was a lot of cash to me. Both my daughters were certified with you in Jasper, but had never dove other than the open course. We dove 5-days with Scuba Shack. All things considered, I would rate Scuba Shack as the best overall dive operator I have dove with, i.e. boat/equipment/personel/experience. their boat is nearly new, less than a year old. From what I saw, it was clearly the largest and best boat operating out of Kihei. I would rate the boat as the best trailer launch boat (which they are all there) I have dove from. No other boat that I saw would come close. their scuba rental gear is clearly the newest and best I have seen in my travel. Equipment is regularly replaced. (Far better condition than your rental equipment.) they provide a very consistent experience. Each day is the same with a clear safety review at the start, clear dive plan and consistent procedures for reboarding/gear/etc. The day ends with the same thank you and sales pitch. the dive masters were all well experienced and guided us well. Captain Valerie does a great job, and, as a Captain, is simply one of a kind. Overall, I have no hesitation in recommending Scuba Shack - Maui to your clients. Smart, smooth operation (I now have 1243 logged dives). DonÕt really like other folks setting up my gear, but first AM DM Dave said he had a Zeagle similar to mine, and sure enough, no worries (same for Toby, Greg, and Capt Valerie). I called from SisÕ place in AZ and, like a bonehead, I signed up for 4 straight days of diving - sleep is, after all, for the weak. First two days wind was howling and it was a wet-cycle washing machine getting to and from the crater. Crew was awesome though, and somehow everyone stayed in a great mood, despite the soaking rain and sprayÑa bad day of diving truly is better than a good day at work. Diving was unaffected, with great vis and lots of critters to take pictures of. The last two days the seas were flat and sun was out, which was paradise compared to the first two days. Scuba ShackÕs dive ops run real smooth, and, despite Elf-sized space to gear up, these guys got it going on. The rinsing of all gear after the last dive is a nice touch, and the crew handles it all. I bring my own gear and there was never an issue with misplacing any of it. On the last day, I finally got in an experienced group and Greg took us deep outside the crater. Getting narked at 7 AM is the best way to start the day, yee haw. Met some great folks from the states and Canada. My mom and I went to Maui for her 50th birthday. She was terrified of the ocean ever since she was a kid, but her fear was the one thing she wanted to overcome by the time she turned 50. She decided to do this by getting on a boat, jetting (because Charlie's boat is the coolest, fastest boat ever) to what is essentially the middle of the ocean in Molokini, and jumping in! She was completely apprehensive and terrified, in truth, but Captain Charlie was so much fun, and able to put her at ease that she was able to do it. Granted, she did throw up off of the back of the boat, but she was very brave. We spent every remaining day of our trip snorkling, and really had a chance to bond, thanks to our outing with Captain Charlie and Crew. It was Lynne's first ocean dive since getting certified this year and far from my first. Toby was the Dive Master for our little group and showed us all kinds of goodies like turtles, puffers, eels, sharks, octo's, and a ton of other sea critters. With Capt. Val and Toby, diver safety was always discussed and exercised in every important aspect. What really made these trips great was that even though I am disabled (missing my left leg and have limited use of one arm), not one staff person treated me any differently than they treated non-disabled customers. As a person with a disability, this is key to an enjoyable dive experience. Their boat is perhaps the newest, best equipped and fastest boat in Maui. It was really easy for me to get in and out of with my one leg. We highly recommend SCUBA Shack for all your diving needs in Maui. In regards to lodging, the Best Western is really close-by the boat ramp but we do not recommend you stay there. The walls are paper thin, there are no accessible guest rooms and the property is rather steep. By the way, did I mention that Toby also made a dive video for us? He charged a reasonable amount for a quality product. Ask him about making you one and you may just recieve a very special memory of your trip. While we liked the other operation we used on Maui, your willingness to ensure two dives with our 10 year old (limited to 40 feet) puts you well above your competitors in our opinion. The three or four other operations we contacted suggested he could snorkel or stay on the boat while we were diving the deeper dive and he would join us only for the second dive. I also noticed a substantial difference in the equipment used by the other boat dive operation, as well as the rental gear we used from another dive shop, compared to the great gear you provide. Toby was a wonderful dive master and took some great photos and videos that we will treasure. You have earned my loyalty even without considering the last-minute problems we encountered (and which you very adeptly handled!). I wish you had operations in Grand Cayman and Belize (do you?). My wife, my brother in law Steve, and I dove on 3 different islands while there. All of the dives were absolutely amazing! However there was a big difference in the companies we booked dives with on each island. Charlie and his staff from Scuba Shack were hands down the best in so many ways. It started with an email that I sent many different companies 2 months ago that some companies did not even bother to return. Charlie himself took the time to answer my 15 questions and send an additional 2 pages of info about his company, staff, and boat. His prices are the best on the island and no additional cost for gear. The gear is top notch and is almost brand new since he sells it and gets new stuff every month. And they have XXL sizes for us big guys! The new boat is as bad ass as dive boats go, Oh and did I tell you its fast! Toby was an awesome dive master and kudos to Michelle at the dive shop who saved our dive with awesome directions to the launch ramp! We almost didn\'t get there in time because our car got boxed in. The food we got while checking in and between dives was better and more plentiful than on any other boats we were on. After experiencing three different dive companies in 3 days I now know what perfection is! Charlie has got it all figured out! Great boat, great staff, great gear, great location, and great prices. We saw dolphins and sea turtles on the way to the dive sites and when the divers started their second dive, Meaghan ( Capt Charley's newest crewmember ) encouraged me to go snorkeling with her. He took us in to a cave at 5 caves dive site. Along with Molokini Crater, he was very patient and showed us various fish and sea life. I was a little hesitant at first to go into a cave (it was called an air pocket)I think but once I got up the courage to follow it was really cool inside. Had a lot of turtles there too. Charley was a great captain too. He went above and beyond since I do get sea sick. I stayed at the back of the boat of hanging out in the water while waiting for everyone else to finish. He asked often how I was feeling along with the staff and other on the boat. This was my first boat dive since being SCUBA certified. Will dive with SCUBA shack next time. Scuba Shack really shows why they deserve to be #1. The crew makes you feel as if you are part of the family. The ride on the jet boat really does feel like being on a giant jet ski and you can see that Charlie really loves his boat and what he does. The crew knows the perfect dive spots and couldn't make you feel more compfortable above and below water. We spent two weeks in the islands, but our best dive days were the last two with ScubaShack and their great staff, particularly Charlie who went out of his way to make Erin's birthday special. We did a great pair of shore dives with Greg and then another pair of wonderful boat dives from the incomparable Double Scoop with Toby. It made getting up so early worth the effort. Erin raved about how much fun the boat was. Not only were the staff, the boat, and the dive sites wonderful; we had the best equipment of the whole trip. Such is the case with Charley and Scuba Shack in Kihei, Maui, Hawaii. I just certified my OW in May 2008 and did my AOW with another dive shop while in Maui July 2008 at 53 young years of age; thank you. My OW was in a lake in Arkansas with 2-3 feet vis, and all dives for both my OW and AOW were shore dives so I did not know what to expect with doing my first boat dive. And I can say without reservation, IT WAS GREAT!!! Charley and his staff really know customer service, an area I know well. The Scuba Shack crew know how to provide a highly enjoyable, fun experience. I am delighted to have had the opportunity to dive with Toby from the Double Scoop, Charles' oversized jetski. If this had been an unpleasent experience I can't say I would be interested in going again. Capt Charlie was entertaining and his brand new FAST boat....WOW!! Capt Charlie gave the competition a 5 minute head start to Molokini Crater and the DUSTED them arriving 5 minutes BEFORE them!! What a ride!! Getting there first meant the best dive sites. We recommend the Drift Dive along En'e Nu'e.....the sharks were awesome!! We dove two days with Capt Charlie and it was worth it. Toby was our Divemaster and I highly recommend going out with him (but you won't go wrong with any of Capt Charlie's crew). First Mate Bianca was a first-rate hostess as well. Our instructor Jim was also very knowledgeable, accommodating above as well as under water, and knew all the right places to search for marine life. Don’t go on this trip expecting just expecting an underwater experience because Captain Charlie and his crew will keep you entertained between dives as well. This is how a dive shop should be run! These folks know how to treat people and, subsequently, keep them coming back. When we were all but stranded on the Kihei boat ramp with apparently no reservation with any of the boats there, Scuba Shack kindly took us in for the day (AND it happened to be cheaper than our original booking). Valerie was our Cpt for the day along with Toby. Both were so friendly and helpful, and I have to say they know how to promote their services. It's no wonder they're a top, if not THE top, scuba dive shop in business today. My wife and I boated out to Molokini for our first morning dive and then over to 5 caves (inner) for the second dive. Valerie was kind enough to chase a few whales in the distance for everyone onboard to enjoy seeing. While diving, the humpbacks were singing away and it made our dives that much more memorable. While the state of the art gear in like-new condition certainly contributes to a memorable outing on a fast and efficient dive boat these folks have it dialed in when it comes to making each outing a great time. I especially enjoy picking Tobys' brain after each dive to discuss the undersea life we've seen. Our boat didn't show up in the morning and Cap'n Valerie and Toby welcomed us aboard. While Toby hustled back to the shop for more gear, the Cap'n got us settled in and we boarded What's the Scoop. We saw more variety of marine life than just about any other of our 50+ dives. Toby did an excellent job of accomdating all skill levels, and pointed out hidden treasures such as a marlin spike, a leafy scorpion fish and Hawaiian lionfishboth tucked away in a coral. Our last day on the island became our most adventerous. Yes, scuba diving was in the cards! We wasted no time; boarded our boat from the Scuba Shack and set out for our 'three hour tour.' To make a long story short, Jim made certain the daring snorklers saw all kinds of beautiful sea life and some awesome fish--a Baracuda even dropped by to say howdy. Captain Charlie, on the other hand, entertained those of us 'brave' souls (who remained on the boat) with his quick wit and smooth charm--no pun intended. Then, as we were heading back to Maui, a mother whale and her calf decided to give us one hell of a show, swimming right beside the boat for the photo shoot of the century! The rules were simple: relax, have fun, and breathe under water. The Scuba Shack crew took care of everything else. I'm a heavy breather, so it was nice that Toby could send me up while the others stayed down to enjoy a few more minutes. He could not have handled it any better. Charley got a new camera for Christmas, and I got some really amazing photos to take home with me, as well as some spectacular dives for my log (the bubble cave and sand cave were insane!).
