The boat was really fast, the weather was fantastic, and there were lots of animals to see underwater. We loved the bubble cave and my sister loved snorkeling with the turtles. I'll dive here next year and have already recommended ScubaShack to others. The shop is well appointed, the gear is nice, and the staff is excellent (both nice and knowledgable - a good combination). We have made several trips with them over the years and enjoyed everyone of them. The boat is the fastest on the islands and the locations out at Molokini, Turtle town, Anthony's shipwreck, 5 caves are all great dives. The equipment is the best and we always enjoy the folks on board. Their prices for boat dives are very reasonable and renting equipment for shore dives can't be beat. All of you out there thinking of diving Maui, you are crazy if you do not give Scuba Shack [and Cptn Charlie] a try. We did not book early enough to get one of the condos - ask early. The waters were rough and we had to do a live drop/pickup. The technical skill of Charley, Toby, and Greg to coordinate this was phenomenal, and made me feel safe. On Monday, 11/21, we had typical calm Maui waters and had the playful, fun, but very skilled crew we usually see at Scuba Shack. Scuba Shack is my favorite outfit in Kihei, and I will continue to dive with them, in fact I'm going back tomorrow! In addition, their equipment is top notch. All-in-all a great experience! I went to Maui with my universal referral paperwork after an injury between dives 4 & 5 of my NAUI certification in Monterey Bay (cold!). Even though there was problem with the paperwork from my NAUI instructor Michelle and the crew at scuba shack were so helpful and got everything sorted out for me. I had a great experience diving Molokini and turtle town. Everything was set up perfectly and everyone so friendly. No schlepping 50 lbs of gear around! Check in was at 5:45am at kihei boat ramp. After checking in, coffee/tea and granola bars, cookies, rice crispier treats were provided for us. When we boarded we found our equipment set up and ready to go. The BC was excellent quality, weights built in according to your weight. Entry was giant stride and free descent down. Took pictures next to turtles, and all sorts of fish. Greg my dive leader made me feel very safe and made sure I was having a great time. When we went back to the boat, snacks (bagels, croissant, muffins, pineapple and other pastries) were waiting for us. The second dive was just as great. Saw turtles, variety of fish and went into a cave and took my mask off for a picture! Can't compliment them enough for the great experience. I'm now PADI certified! The CD that I purchased for $40 was great to watch and made especially for me. Can't wait to share it with my family and friends! Beside having all new dive equipment, a jet propelled dive boat that gives you a fast and fun ride to the dive site, tasty treats, lowest rates, and most importantly they are nice people. We had planned on diving inside the crater but were pleasantly surprised when Toby suggested we dive the wall with the other dive group. We had not dove in 5-6 years, but Toby and the rest of the staff took care of all our equipment and our needs. I have been on several boat/snorkel/scuba tours and this boat is by far the nicest, fastest and well maintained boat I have ever seen. We highly recommend Scuba Shack and we will definitely be using them next time we are back here in paradise! So far we have dove with ScubaShack twice on this trip, we hit Molokini, Red Hill and Five Caves. Saw some great sea life, such as a white tip reef shark, turtles and the usual variety of endemic fish. Captain Jim and Toby made for a great dive trip. The Scuba Shack is truly Maui’s best when it comes to all things scuba! With some research and a little bit of luck, my husband found Maui’s most amazing group of people with whom I completed my dive certification. From the moment we called to schedule my skills training and checkout dives, to the very last goodbye after an absolutely fantastic dive experience, I felt as if Leah, Michelle, Charley, Toby and Jim had become lifelong friends. Not only were they all so welcoming and gracious, Scuba Shack offered excellent training with brand new equipment, and planned our dive very skillfully down the to very last detail, ensuring a fun, relaxing and most importantly, enjoyable experience for everyone. Since no one ever mentions Jim, please let me do the honors. My dive instructor Jim is without a doubt, second to none! Between my fear of being under water, my classmate Andrea’s shark phobia, and let me not forget to mention her recently discovered defective nose, I suspect sweet Jim realized all too quickly upon meeting us that he had his work cut out for him for the next three days! Nevertheless, he was a champ, handling both of us with such care. Jim was very patient, extremely knowledgeable, and a natural fit for both diving and instructing. By the end of our first dive, the only person wearing a smile bigger than Andrea, Brad, the ever so Kewl Luke, me or even my proud husband, was most definitely Jim. I think nothing made him happier that day than knowing four new scuba rookies had the time of our lives on our very first dive! Thanks Scuba Shack. I was not on board with this decision. I had some serious fears going in. From the first phone call to Scuba Shack we knew we had chosen the right dive shop. Leah and Michelle were very professional and answered ALL of my questions(even the most ridiculous). It was the first step in putting my fears aside. Jim was our instructor and I can't say enough good about him. He has an amazing ability to calm you down under water. I had more than one moment of panic underwater but he was quick to make eye contact and reassure me. I don't think I would have been able to get through it without him. After getting through the first 2 days of skills with Jim we had a fantastic boat trip for our final two dives. Charley's boat is awesome and got us out to Molokini in a matter of minutes. It was fun to watch him show his boat off, you can tell Charlie takes a huge amount of pride in his boat, and business but also his crew. So I guess the bottom line is, Scuba Shack and Jim were able to turn a very reluctant diver into a VERY happy customer. My husband and my 15 year old son were also certified but Jim didn't have to work as hard to earn a paycheck with them! We are trying to squeeze in another dive trip before we leave the beautiful island of Maui. Thanks so much Scuba Shack for giving us the highlight of our trip to Maui, we will be back. A trip of a lifetime! Our family has 3 certified divers and 4 that would just be snorkeling but we all went on the same charter. Charlie, Jim and Toby made us feel welcome from the parking lot on. The diving was world class and the crew is totally on their game. These are cool people who like what they do and define customer service as it should be. They were respectful of the advanced divers and helpful to those with less experience without being condescending. If you are planning a vacation in Maui I can't imagine any charter topping these guys. This is absolutely a must do for divers going there and my family is already planning our return trip! This was my third time diving with Scuba Shack over a 10 year period. There are so many good reasons to dive with Scuba Shack: amazingly fast boat gets you out for 2 long dives and back to shore in time for brunch; high quality rental gear means I don't have to stuff my BC in my suitcase; hot shower on the boat; great divemasters who show you lots of cool stuff (thanks Toby!); snacks/breakfast, including fresh cut pineapple; a Captain who makes sure everything runs smoothly and everyone has a great time (thanks Charley!). There were advanced and new divers on the boat. Jim and Shane were doing a great job with the folks getting certified. Michelle and Lia in the shop were also very helpful. Charlie's boat gets you you out to Molikini in 10 - 15 minutes, so you spend your morning diving instead of riding a boat. He uses great new equipment, so you don't have to haul all of yours (and pay airline check fees). His crew sets everything up, helps you in and out of your gear and leads great dives. It like having luxury hotel valet service on a dive boat. Their trips also have the best price in town and they don't charge extra for rental gear. Charlie and his crew obviously love what they're doing, and it shows. I will be back here every time I come to Maui. The few negative comments posted on TripAdvisor are simply not justified and exaggerate the allegedly-negative experiences. There is no other dive shop on Maui who INCLUDES brand-new gear (wetsuits, BCD's, regulator w/dive computer!, fins, etc...) in their very-reasonably priced $125 for 2-tank dive package. The coffee and light snacks at 5:45 am hit the spot, as well as the continental breakfast between dives, and the small 6-diver-per-master groups are the perfect size. Then, you get to ride the Scoop, which gets you to Molokini faster than any of the other dive outfits (who charge extra for their equipment and don't show you anything different at the dive site). We were done with Molokini when the other dive companies were just starting their dives there! We also loved the warm fresh water shower after the second dive. We appreciated Captain Charley's and crew's sense of humor and fun atmosphere which made the dive safe, fun, exiting, and worthwhile. There's simply no reason to go elsewhere! The Scuba Shack rules! For those of you who are reading this and considering a scuba dive when in Hawaii and specifically Maui, the Scuba Shack is the only way to go!!! My husband and I got to dive two separate days while we were in Maui, and each dive was a completely different, unique experience. All of the staff was a lot of fun, but still professional. The boat had lots of speed so we beat most, if not all of the other dive crews out that morning and secured great spots. The dive equipment we were able to use/borrow on the boat was new and great quality! There were even snacks on board the boat for consumption in between dives, and a hot, freshwater shower to clean you up and warm you up after. We were able to purchase a DVD that had photos and video clips from our dives, available to us later that same day, so we can remember all of the great moments. We definitely plan to use these guys every time we vacation in Maui, and after this trip, we plan to try to go much more often! My sister and i went snorkeling while my boyfriend was diving, Captain Charley was one of a kind even wash my sister and my hair on the boat with shampoo and conditioner, it doesn't get cooler than that. Breakfast was great all kind of goodies to eat, their equipment was great, very clean the whole works!!! Boat ride was so much fun, we got to Molokini in like 10 mins. My 26 yo son and I were in Maui for a week and wanted to get in a morning of diving. We went through trip advisor and my dive magazines and decided on the Scuba Shack---WOW- a Grand Slam!! The equipment was the BEST I have ever encountered on a dive trip rental. Really--THE BEST. New, weight integrated, pony type octopus, computers, and the fastest boat you will ever ride on!!! The crew was phenomenal: Capt Charlie is fun, hip, and knowledgeable. Jim was a laid back and informative dive master that was a great tour guide under the water. We dove the back wall of the Molokini Crater. This was not a great dive for us because of the clouds blocking the sun and an incredible surge. We got through it and went to site 2......now it got really amazing. The breakfast was 5 star(not the usual granola bar and water you get on most operations. I was hungry to start---and very satisfied wen done. Our second dive was in Red Rock---ARE YOU KIDDING!!! It was like a truck stop for turtles, eels, and frog fish. Vis was 100 ft+, depth at 30-40(what i believe to be the sweet spot) and the drift was effortless. Jim was great as a leader(helping those that were less sure of themselves) and we all had a great dive. Back to the dock at 10 am!!!! Two dives!!!!! REALLY!! They handled both my kids superbly! They took the kids to the same beach for the beach dive. Nice dive around the reef then brought them in for the skills test. My daughter and I dove with them then went on our own during the skills test. Next followed a dive at Molokini. I can't imagine a better place for a first open water dive. Again my daughter and I dove with them just for the fun of it. Great crew and dive masters/instructors. After a great dive we washed off with warm water and had pineapple and cakes, muffins, and bagels. Then a nice ride back toward Maui where we did a wreck dive. A timed bottom dive on a wreck where we found Frog fish, shark, an of course, a sleeping turtle in the cabin. Did I mention this was the final qualification dive for my son. A wreck dive at depth with 100 foot visibility. Perfect. Then, a fast boat ride back to the harbour. Did I mention that the boat was FAST! I can see this is Cap'n Charlie's pride and joy. 700 horse twin jetted boat. Makes you want to ride around in the boat longer. End of a great drive and my son's completion of his certificate. So, with all this we decided one just wasn't enough! And with my son's brand new certificate we decided to go on a drift dive. Once again, a fast boat ride with a great crew out to the back side of Molokini. We strode off the boat and headed on down. A perfect dive. Eels, shark, spotted rays, and of course, beautiful fish. So, after drifting around to the other side of Molokini, my kids just ahead of me and the island do our bottom and right. Then, back aboard for pineapple and croissants. A great boat ride to the second drift at red hill. A shallow dive, about 40 feet and from the boat you could see all the way to the bottom easily. Again, another great dive. Rock fish, eels, spotted ray, and sharks. Through a cave, around the other side, and then topside. A great boat ride back in talking with my kids and just enjoying the view. Then, for our debriefing we were listening to the music Charlie plays when over the radio the announcer called out all our names on the boat. What a fun end of great dive! I took my non-certified 10 year-old daughter and she joined us for the shallower second dive through PADI's Discover Scuba. Captain Charley and the crew made her and the other youngsters on board feel more than welcome and not a hinderance in any way. The boat is extremely fast and leaving early allows the crew to choose the best spot based on the conditions and feedback from the customers. The pre-dive time is long enough for a good dive briefing without some of the excessive surface time other operators have and then it's in to their almost-new equipment and time to make bubbles. On my earlier dives we did the back wall of Molokini and saw some white-tip reef sharks and a lot of interesting sea life but this morning we were the only boat inside the crater and were rewarded with an acrobatic performance from a 16ft Manta Ray. It hung out for several minutes before the noise of an approaching boat made it seek a quieter place. As a PADI certified Divemaster I have been diving with many operators in many countries but Captain Charley and the crew are one of the best I've ever come across and we'll definitely be back, probably even staying at the accommodations they offer. The crew is top notch, professional and full service beyond any and all expectations. The service starts with hot coffee and coco in the morning followed by the fastest boat ride to Molokni available. Next you dive with brand new gear (literally on this particular morning) that is placed on your back by the crew. No joke - your only chore is to stand up and step off the boat to start your dive. The dives are led by really nice guys that scale their speed and approach to the skill of the divers. The dive this morning started with an amazing drift dive around the back side of the crater. A real treat that the larger boats don¬ít generally offer. After the first dive they turned on the warm showers to get everybody nice and comfortable for the rest stop. The breakfast was simple but delicious (fresh pineapple, coffee cake, muffins, bagels and cream cheese). A terrific assortment of drinks are there for the taking too. No alcohol though. Somebody apparently decided that a couple of beers between dives was not such a good idea. Probably some lawyer from the mainland¬Ö The captain plays good music during the break to get you pumped up for dive #2. Such a great vibe. Our second dive was a red rock drift dive. This has hands-down always been my favorite dive. It¬ís not particularly deep (about 40ft or so), but it¬ís really clear and I'¬íve always had great luck with seeing lots of cool sea life. Today might have been my favorite day ever. Our sightings started with a giant turtle and ended with the tiniest turtle I have ever seen. In between we came across three whitetip reef sharks (one was about 6ft long), a couple of sand flounder, an Eagle Ray, a huge school of needlefish, and an abundance of amazing coral formations. The gentle tug of the current at red rock makes the dive really fun. It ends with a really neat swim through a cavern where you will see tons of sleepy big-eyed fish hiding out hoping you won¬ít notice them. Following the second dive, the crew cleans and organizes all the gear (both theirs and divers own gear), boots up the warm shower and then provides an express ride back to the harbor. Over the last ten years, I have tried a few other dive companies, but these guys are where you go for great, personalized and friendly service on a smaller charter with a friggin huge engine. I hope to be back each summer for another ten years. We saw one breach 100m from the boat before the 1st dive and could hear them calling during the entirety of the dives. We then dove the back wall of Molokini and saw 2 grey sharks. In transit from the first and second dive sites, captain Valerie was able to drive alongside a pod of around 30 spinner dolphins, it was amazing! On the second dive we saw many turtles, frog fish and a leaf scorpion fish. Toby and I were actually able to save a couple turtle that had been incapacitated by fishing line. We have dove with SCUBA Shack for 3 years now and it just keeps getting better. In addition, we bought 2 of the used gear packages and they were like new (mine might have actually been new)!! The entire crew was superb, the sites were great, and when my computer quit it was pretty darned nice to just grab the computer on the console of that brand new equipment used on the boat. It was a typical mix of experienced divers, less experienced divers and some snorkelers. A great time was had by all from what I could tell. Sunday was something else altogether. If this had been one of the 'other' boats I've dived from I would have wondered if it was a mistake to get on board. But like your website says, its like having friends on Maui with a boat, friends with a lot of skill and the ability to watch each diver while simultaneously finding all the fun stuff underwater. Were those 8 or 10 foot swells on the ride to the arches? Every single diver on the boat was very seasoned and confident. The back wall at Molokini was pretty dull as usual (why does everyone always want to dive there?), but Dana, who came as our spotter, made it more fun with her exhuberance. Toby my dive master was fantastic, he pointed out eels, sharks and led us on some great dives at Molokini and the St. Anthony wreck. Scuba Shack should be the standard that all dive companies are compared to. I had my own wet suit, mask, fins and snorkle and needed a BC and Reg. Their equipment is brand new...actually I'm not sure that anyone had ever dove it before! Computer integrated consul, weight integrated BC...why bring your own gear when their gear is brand new! A hot water shower after getting out of the water while watching the whales surface and eating a little breakfast. I would highly recommend Scuba Shack as one of if not the premier dive operators! It was calm or very calm each time we went there. Also in 2008 and 2006 there was nothing death- defying about the back wall. The scuba shack boat is really fast which gives you more time at anchor in peace and quiet. The 5mm wetsuits helped me fight hypothermia and were better than mine which I brought along and used also. We are both new divers and wanted to spend our vacation doing as much diving as we would. We were a little nervous about booking all of our dives with one company in case if our experience wasn't good. Fortunately, we booked with the Scuba Shack and ended up with an amazing diving company. The equipment was top notch. Everything was brand new. Some of the equipment was only a couple of weeks old. The boat was comfortable and set up for easy access to the water and getting into gear. The best part was the crew. Captain Val was amazing. We are both new divers and wanted to spend our vacation doing as much diving as we would. We were a little nervous about booking all of our dives with one company in case if our experience wasn't good. Fortunately, we booked with the Scuba Shack and ended up with an amazing diving company. The equipment was top notch. Everything was brand new. Some of the equipment was only a couple of weeks old. The boat was comfortable and set up for easy access to the water and getting into gear. The best part was the crew. Captain Val was amazing. She could unload and drive a boat better than most men, all the while sporting pink clothes! She was great at checking our gear once it was on and helping us exit and enter the boat safely. This was also our first drift dive and it was one of the best dives we've done so far. On our second day, we almost missed the boat (literally) due to the alarm being set for P.M. instead of A.M. I booked ten dives the day after I arrived in Maui and dove with the Scuba Shack exclusively during my month-long stay. What I found was that this dive operator is consistently top-notch. I have made many dives, at many destinations and Scuba Shack stands out ahead of the pack. They use a brand new boat with dual jets running 1400 horse power. (The boat is fast ‚Äö√†√´‚Äö√†√´ Molikini in about ten minute on calm seas.) The crew and dive masters are simply awesome. They provide a safe and professional environment while maintaining a relaxed and friendly environment. I know from my personal experience as an Airline Pilot and Navy Pilot that this is a real art. While diving with Scuba Shack, I saw more sharks, turtles eels and topical fish than is imaginable. Had two great dives,Molokini,crystal clear water. Saw reef sharks,octopus,eels,plenty of fish of all kinds. Second dive site,turtles and dolphins.Crew was great (Valeri,Toby,Jim). The staff was highly efficient, very friendly, entertaining and professional and made the trip a lot of fun. They took care of everything, starting with a helpful reminder email with directions etc. the night before the dive. Scuba Shack has one dive option that starts early (we were in the water before 7 a.m.) so the kids aren't waiting all day for me to get home! When I met them in the morning, check-in with Captain Valerie was easy, and the coffee was good and hot. The 710HP jet-boat is a hoot to ride out to Molokini. They set up my (and everyone else's) equipment efficiently and in a way that made gearing up as easy as possible. The diving itself was spectacular, too. On a single Molokini dive, the Scuba Shack DM led us past a spotted eagle ray, not one but two different kinds of sharks, eels of all kinds, and of course gobs of cool fish and coral. A shallow second dive was just as action-packed, with more green sea turtles than you could point a camera at. It was such a great set of dives that I bought the DVD they made of it (and I never buy stuff like that). I cannot recommend the folks at Scuba Shack highly enough. One evening recently my friends and I met up on Maui - after long flights from Germany, Canada and the Dominican Republic. We were exhausted but headed out with Scuba Shack the very first morning. From our first steps on the boat - we were energized! It was fantastic! Captain Valerie, Toby and Jay were extremely knowledgeable and super friendly. Diving and snorkeling with Scuba Shack is everything you imagine! Captain Charley is a prince and his crew are awesome! We recommend spending a day or a week with them.
