Best Dive Sites on Maui's West Side
Maui’s west coast is home to some of the most spectacular dive sites in all of Hawaii. Whether you are a certified diver looking for your next adventure or a beginner ready to take the plunge, the waters off Lahaina and Kihei have something incredible waiting for you.
Mala Wharf
One of Maui’s most iconic dives, Mala Wharf is an old pier that was partially destroyed by a hurricane and has since become an artificial reef teeming with life. Green sea turtles rest under the concrete pilings, and you will often spot white-tip reef sharks cruising through the structure. The site ranges from 15 to 40 feet deep, making it accessible for divers of all experience levels.
Black Rock (Pu’u Keka’a)
Located right off Ka’anapali Beach, Black Rock is a dramatic lava formation that drops into crystal-clear water. The wall is covered in colorful corals and sponges, and the marine life is extraordinary. Moorish idols, humuhumunukunukuapua’a (Hawaii’s state fish), and octopus are regular sightings. At night, Black Rock transforms into one of the best night dive locations on the island.
Five Graves (Five Caves)
South of Wailea, Five Graves is named for a small cemetery near the entry point. Don’t let the name spook you; this site is a favorite among local divers for good reason. Lava tubes and caverns create an underwater playground, and the area is known for frequent turtle and eagle ray encounters. Depths range from 20 to 60 feet.
Honolua Bay
When conditions are calm, Honolua Bay on Maui’s northwest tip offers pristine visibility and a thriving reef ecosystem. This marine preserve is bursting with tropical fish, and spinner dolphins are sometimes spotted in the bay. It is a shore dive that rewards the short hike down with an unforgettable underwater experience.
