What to Expect on Your First Scuba Dive
Taking your first breath underwater is one of those experiences that stays with you forever. If you are thinking about trying scuba diving on Maui, here is a straightforward guide to what your first dive will actually look like.
Before You Get in the Water
No certification is needed for a Discover Scuba experience. Our PADI-certified instructors handle all the gear setup and walk you through everything on land before you ever touch the water. You will learn the basics: how to breathe through a regulator, how to equalize your ears, and a few simple hand signals.
The whole land briefing takes about 20 to 30 minutes. It is relaxed and conversational, not a lecture. Ask as many questions as you want; that is what we are here for.
The Gear
You will wear a wetsuit (Maui’s water is warm, but a thin suit keeps you comfortable), a BCD (buoyancy control device, which is basically an inflatable vest), a tank, fins, a mask, and a regulator. Your instructor sets everything up for you. The gear feels heavy on land but once you are in the water, you will barely notice it.
Your First Moments Underwater
Most first-time divers describe the initial descent as surreal. You will start in shallow water, kneeling on a sandy bottom at about 10 to 15 feet. Your instructor will run through a few skills with you: clearing your mask, recovering your regulator, and controlling your buoyancy.
Once you are comfortable, the real adventure begins. Your instructor leads the way along the reef, pointing out marine life as you go. Most Discover Scuba dives reach a maximum depth of 30 to 40 feet.
What You Will See
Maui’s reefs are home to over 250 species of fish, plus green sea turtles, moray eels, octopus, and the occasional eagle ray. The colors are vivid: bright yellows, electric blues, and deep purples cover the coral formations. Many first-time divers are surprised by how close the marine life comes. Turtles in particular are famously unbothered by divers and will often glide right past you.
Common Concerns
“What if I panic?” Your instructor is with you the entire time, and you can surface whenever you want. There is no pressure to stay down if you are not comfortable.
“What if I can’t equalize my ears?” This is the most common issue, and your instructor will teach you multiple techniques. Most people find one that works within the first few feet.
“Do I need to be a strong swimmer?” You need to be comfortable in the water, but you do not need to be an athlete. The gear does most of the work for you.
