Types of Whales Around Maui

Species or groups of whales (or toothed whales / dolphin-type whales) that are known or suspected to occur in the Maui's shallow channels.

Humpback Whale

Very high likelihood of encountering. Dominant species in Maui’s whale season. These whales migrate to Hawaii in winter to breed, give birth, and nurse.

Short-finned Pilot Whale

Occassional viewing. These are technically part of the dolphin family (but still “whales”). They are more often found in deeper water or offshore regions.

False Killer Whale

Sightings are uncommon but have been documented around Maui and between islands.

Melon-headed Whale

Rarely seen because these favor deep offshore ocean waters rather than the shallower reefs.

Minke Whale

Eight species of baleen whales have been observed in Hawaii waters (not necessarily Maui). Many are only occasional visitors.
